“CHILI QUEENS” FOOD TRUCK  RE-LAUNCHES AS “THE INSTITUTE OF CHILI”

Southtown’s hottest food truck “The Chili Queens” is changing its name. Starting Wednesday August 1st, the new name will be “THE INSTITUTE OF CHILI.”

Ana Fernandez, noted San Antonio artist and the owner, said the name change came about in response to concerns over literal use of the historic name.

“The original chili queens were street food pioneers who we owe a cultural and culinary debt of gratitude,” Fernandez said. “Our new name will allow the business to grow unencumbered by literal, historical associations. The new name more clearly defines our attitude and unique culinary vision, while still paying homage to the original chili queens. The “Chili Queens” is not a place or geographical location. The chili queens were entrepreneurs, Mexican- American women of San Antonio who sold chili in open air markets for over 200 years. That is my culinary heritage. I am honored to carry on the tradition in 2012 as a bona fide chili queen.”

The Institute of Chili operate a food truck at the Alamo Street Eat Bar, 609 South Alamo Street. Affordable menu options include classic and vegetarian chili, brisket tacos, the popular Roosevelt fried egg over chili and pork tamale, the BOMB and many other offerings, including homemade pecan cheesecake pie.

“Most of our customers spend less than $10 on their meal,” Fernandez said. “After a few visits, they become regulars, and we love seeing them. In fact, the very popular ‘Maricela’s Combo’ was named after one of our favorite customers.”

Hours are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:00 pm to 12 a.m. and Fridays and Saturdays, 5:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., and Sundays, 11:00 am to 12 a.m. www.instituteofchili.com.
